NEW HARTFORD — A major regional philanthropic organization Thursday night presented two awards intended to honor local players in the world of not-for-profit work.

This year, the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties Inc. recognized F. Eugene Romano and the Johnson Park Center in Utica.

"I'm very excited and honored," said the Rev. Maria A. Scates, the founder of Utica's Johnson Park Center, which received the Community Impact Award during a presentation at the Yahnundasis Golf Club.

JPC's award recognized "a not-for-profit organization that has used its grant support for extraordinary impact and results," the foundation said in a statement.
