UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - There was a big party going on at Johnson Park in the city of Utica Thursday evening, but it was just for kids and set to an educational theme.

The "Back to School Party" got underway on Thursday at Johnson Park with food, activities, and educational contests, with the winners all receiving school supplies.

However, you don't just have to be a winner to walk away set for school, as all kids who sign up and join the fun will receive a bag of pens, paper rulers and more, all donated by local organizations.

"It is so important because we are living in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city of Utica and a lot of the families here can not afford school supplies," said Reverend Dr. Maria Scates, Chief Executive Officers of Johnson Park.

Student see those supplies as crucial to their success in school.

"Because I want to be a lawyer when I grow up, I can do a lot of things with just a piece of paper and a pen, since I love to write and I love to read," said Jedcea Simmons, in 7th grade.

The party got students excited to get back to school and also celebrated their summer accomplishments with various Youth Leadership Awards.
